If she thinks she got a poor mark because she did not read the required text or learn the vocabulary, then the information she has is “unstable”: It is possible for her to change. Next time, she can do more preparation, and do better.

It is important to note that her awareness of possible change does not automatically lead to confidence. If she thinks she got a poor mark because the teacher did not like her, or she was “just unlucky,” or the test was unfair, then the information she has is “unstable” in that it can easily change; but she nevertheless has no control over changing it, since “luck” and the teacher’s bias, have nothing to do with her.
